TY - JOUR ID - 719468 AU - Loudová, Kateřina PY - 2006 TI - Word Order Variation in John Malalas’ Chronicle PB - Masarykova univerzita CY - Brno SN - 8021040696 KW - word order KW - clause-initial predicates KW - topic-function predicates N2 - The article deals with the prevailing verb-subject word order in John Malalas’ Chronicle. The word order in the Chronicle seems to fully reflect the contemporary evolution of the postclassical Greek, which started in the Hellenistic period when the shift of the verb to the initial position in the clause is noticeable in documents written in low or middle style Greek. However, the prevailing initial position of the verb in Malalas’ Chronicle has to be explained in different ways, due to the fact that Malalas follows different principles: there are predicates-topics and predicates-focuses.
