The main question in the area religion and education in the Czech Republic is, whether this relationship is understood as religious education or information about religions. Thus the essence of the problem facing Czech education can be summarized, the problem that has not been thoroughly opened to the discussion of experts and general public yet. Religious education is contained in the educational subject entitled Religious Education and this is education of students leading them towards religion. Usually this subject is taught by religious professionals and is voluntary. (With the exception of private religious schools, where it is compulsory). Information about religions should be contained in the educational subject called e.g. World Religions and this should cover education and providing knowledge about religions of the world, i.e. the educational aim is to inform students on various forms of religious faith, history of churches, geography of religions etc.

Základní otázkou tématu náboženství a výchova je, zdali je tento vztah chápán buď jako náboženské formování nebo jako informace o náboženstvích. Takto by se ve zkratce dala shrnout podstata problému před kterým české základní a střední školství stále stojí, problému, který dosud nebyl pořádně otevřen odborné a veřejné diskusi. Náboženské formování je obsaženo ve výukovém předmětu nazvaném Náboženská výchova a jedná se v něm o výuku a výchovu žáků a studentů směrem k náboženství, tj. edukačním cílem je formovat náboženskou víru. Informace o náboženstvích by měla být obsažena ve výukovém předmětu nazvaném například Náboženství světa a jedná se v něm o výuku o náboženstvích světa, tj. edukačním cílem je informovat o rozmanitých podobách náboženské víry, dějinách církví, geografii náboženství atp. Bez výjimky by měl být tento předmět vyučován nikoliv náboženskými profesionály, ale profesionály na náboženství a měl by mít podobný statut jako např. základy filozofie.
