This layer was prepared by PECVD using capacitive coupled r.f. glow discharge from the 8% hexamethyl-disiloxane in oxygen. The coated substrate was subsequently annealed in vacuum at 970 K for 30 min. Iron catalyst thin film (10 nm) was vacuum evaporated on the top of the silicon oxide. Natural iron was used for standard samples and iron enriched to 90% by 57Fe isotope for the samples used for measurements of Mössbauer spectra. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used for the investigations of sample surfaces using Al x-ray tube and synchrotron radiation for measurement of Si 2p and Fe 2p spectra. They yielded information from the surface layer approx. 1 nm in depth. Conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy on 57Fe (CEMS) was applied for investigation of iron containing phases in the surface layer approx. 200 nm thick. ER -
