This article focuses on some of the stereotypes that have influenced the study of the Roman imperial cult. These prejudices stem especially from the ingrained tendency of many scholars to consider this phenomenon primarily as a special kind of political homage that had only superficial, if any, religious connections. The author of this article, however, contends that this sharp dichotomy between political and religious is entirely modern and has no justification in the study of ancient civilizations. The imperial cult involved both dimensions and their artificial separation is meaningless and misleading.
