Abstract
Stenopetalum harbors species with the lowest known chromosome number (n=4) in the Brassicaceae. Despite the extremly reduced chromosome complement, genome size of S. nutans (480 Mb) is three times larger than the Arabidopsis genome (157 Mb).In Stenopetalum nutans (n=4), comparative chromosome painting (CCP) using BAC contigs covering the top and bottom arm of two Arabidopsis chromosomes (At3 and At4) revealed two homeologous copies of both chromosome segments. The presence of multiple homeologous copies suggests that the Stenopetalum ancestor experienced a paleotetraploidy event followed by genome diploidization towards extremely reduced karyotypes.
