More than 2650 species are known from all the main biogeographical regions. Aquatic or at least semi-aquatic larvae are known in 75 spp. and presumed in 889 species. The majority of descriptions are based on larvae originating from the Nearctic and the western part of the Palaearctic Regions.

Dosud je znáno více jak 2650 druhů ze všech hlavní biogeogragfických oblastí. Akvatické nečbo nejmíéně semiakvatické larvy byly popsány u 75 druhů a předpokládány jsou u 889 druhů. Většina popisů je založena na larvách pocházejících z nearktické nebo západní části palearktické oblasti.
