Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their N-heterocycles (aza-PAHs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants and they are frequently present in contaminated soils. The aim of this study was to compare the toxic effects of selected two- and three-ringed PAHs (naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene) and their N-heterocyclic analogues with one (quinoline, acridine, phenanthridine) or two (quinoxaline, phenazine, 1,10-phenanthroline) nitrogen atoms on the survival and reproduction of Enchytraeus crypticus in OECD artificial soil tests. The results did not indicate clear relationships between the toxicity and the chemical structure of the compounds. The most toxic compounds were quinoxaline (LC50 = 100-500 mg/kg, EC50 = 500-1000 mg/kg) and naphthalene (LC50 = 861 mg/kg, EC50 = 469 mg/kg), the other tested compounds showed relatively lower toxicity: LC50 values were in range from 1692 to more than 2500 mg/kg and EC50 values from 796 to 1412 mg/kg. All the findings are based on nominal concentrations.
