Po roce 1990 došlo v České republice k výrazným změnám v mnoha oblastech společenského života. Součástí těchto změn bylo i to, že s návratem k tržnímu hospodářství a soukromému vlastnictví se česká rodina vrátila k modelu rodiny a rodinného chování, charakteristickému pro západní Evropu. Představovalo to rychlé změny ve formách partnerského soužití, ale i v počtu narozených dětí, či věku matek při porodu jejich prvního dítěte (česká populace prošla, i když o generaci později než západoevropské země, druhou demografickou transicí). To vše vyvolává také otázku po hodnotě, kterou má dnes v České republice dítě pro své (potenciální) rodiče a na ni se snaží odpovědět i tento text.

Potential societal problems give rise to the questions: What is the basis for Czech women s current desire and willingness to have children? The Czech family underwent two transformations in the last decade: 1) society had to adjust to changes in the political and economic systems, and 2) the western European value system and lifestyle began to influence everyday life in ways that de-emphasized natality. The opportunity costs of maternity increased and fertility, especially among young women, has dramatically decreased. The marriage rate has decreased across all age groups, and the number of children born out of wedlock, especially among the lower social classes, has grown. The next decade will be important in determining whether the value of children will decrease among the Czech people. The results of our research indicate that the Czech Republic will experience only a limited decrease in the value of children. People still understand children as being of paramount value in their lives, yet they do not have them.
