Authorship of the play Sir Thomas More, a part of which is attributed to William Shakespeare (Hand D), is reconsidered. Its dramatic unity, the subtle symmetries of its characters, and its network of cross-references point to an unique artistic intention. In addition to the number of references to various works by Shakespeare already noted in the modern editions of Sir Thomas More by Jenkins and by Gabrieli and Melchiori, the article brings into light number of textual coincidences.

Autorství hry Sir Thomas More je sporné stejně jako její datace. Její část (Hand D) byla poměrně nedávno prohlášena za Shakespeararův vklad tomuto jinak kolektivnímu dílu. Osolsobě se domnívá (podobně jako Richard Simpson již před 150 lety), že podíl Shakespearův byl větší, zvláště ve dvou posledních dějstvích. K množství textových shod a odkazů, které podávají Gabrieli a Melchiori v podrobné kritické edici hry (kteří však považují hru za dílo Antony Mundaye), přidává mnohé další a ukazuje jejich funkci v politickém kódu alžbětinského divadla.
