The Neandertals clearly represent autochtonous population of eastern Central Europe during the last interglacial and early glacial (OIS 5). The question of their later survival is discussed in this paper, taking into account both the limited anthropological record and the relatively abondant archaeological context. Even if the problem is far from being solved, it may be concluded that the Neandertal extinction in this region was not the effect of climatic deterioration during the Lower Pleniglacial maximum (OIS 4), but, rather, results from the several millenia of coexistence with the newly emerging early modern humans during the Interpleniglacial (OIS 3).

Neandrtálci představují ve východní střední Evropě lokální populaci během posledního interglaciálu i časného glaciálu (OIS 5). V tomto článku je diskutována otázka jejich dalšího přežívání, s využitím jak nepočetného antropologického materiálu, tak podstatně hojnějšího archeologického záznamu. I když problém dosud nelze definitivně uzavřít, již nyní je zřejmé, že vymření neandertálců v této oblasti není důsledkem klimatického zhoršení během prvního glaciálního maxima (OIS 4), ale teprve několika tisíciletí koexistence s nově příchozími anatomicky moderními lidmi v následujícím interpleniglaciálu (OIS 3).
