Abstract

An interdisciplinary monograph dedicated to the most representative site of the Upper Gravettian (Willendorf-Kostenki) chronological stage in the Czech Republic. The first part of the book summarizes geographic location, history of research in its three main stages (J. Folprecht, B. Klíma, J. Svoboda), geological and stratigraphic position, radiocarbon dating (21-23 tis. let BP) placing the site just before the Last Glacial Maximum, spatial distribution of the settlement structures, hearths, pits, and artifact distribution. The second part of the book is dedicated to lithic raw materials, industries, use-wear analysis of their surfaces, ochre (including the figurine of the Petřkovice Venus which has been carved of a ochre piece), fragments of coal, baked clay, vegetational and animal remains. The third part of the book follows chronology and distribution of the Upper Gravettian and the typical shouldered points across Europe, the distribution of female figurines across Paleolithic Eurasia and their recent etnological analogies.

Abstract (in Czech)

Interdisciplinárně koncipovaná monografie věnovaná reprezentativní lokalitě mladého gravettienu (fáze willendorf-kostěnki) v ČR. Prvá část knihy shrnuje geografickou polohu lokality, historii výzkumu v jeho třech hlavních etapách (J. Folprecht, B. Klíma, J. Svoboda), geologickou a stratigrafickou situaci, radiokarbonové datování (21-23 tis. let BP) kladoucí osídlení těsně před maximum posledního glaciálu, rozložení sídelních struktur, ohnišť, jam a prostorové distribuce artefaktů. Druhá část knihy je věnována kamenným surovinám, artefaktům, analýze pracovních stop na jejich povrchu, barvivům (včetně figurky Petřkovické venuše, která byla z úlomku barviva řezána), úlomkům uhlí a pálené hlíny, rostlinným a živočišným materiálům. Třetí část knihy sleduje chronologii a rozšíření mladého gravettienu s typickými hroty s vrubem v Evropě, dále výskyt ženských zobrazení v paleolitu Eurasie a jejich recentí etnologické analogie.
