Abstract
In The Empire Writes Back, the now classic study of post-colonial literatures, Bill Ashcroft defines the appropriation as a useful strategy to undermine the dominant position of Standard English over other forms of English. Though Ashcroft speaks primarily about the language appropriation, the concept can be applied to other fields as well. This paper deals with the appropriation of American cultural history in the works of two contemporary Native American authors, Louise Erdrich and Sherman Alexie.
