Sfinga, kladoucí záludné otázky a ovládající jimi znejistělou polis, je v tomto pojetí chápána jako narativní symbol anomie, jež Théby opanovala po smrti vladaře. Výklad dále rozvíjí dvojznačnou povahu Oidipovy odpovědi Sfinze, domnívá se, že odpověď sama nesla jednak rozměr kognitivní, v kterém se vysvětlí, kdo člověk je, a jednak také rozměr normativní, v kterém Oidipus stanoví, kým člověk být má. Normativní povahu odpovědi přitom dosvědčuje v logice příběhu nevyhnutelná sankce, které je posléze celá polis i nový vladař vystaven. Mýtus nezpochybňuje odpovědnost aktérů, je však také znepokojivým vyprávěním o otevřené „otázce“ lidské existence, kterou se – stejně nezbytně jako nedokonale – pokoušíme „zodpovědět“: vytěsnit, uzavřít a bezpečně ohradit tím, že budujeme modelový svět.
