Abstract

Gender je výrazným hybatel nerovnosti ve stáří. Ovlivňuje například výši zdrojů, kterými jednotlivci mohou disponovat, kvalitu sociálních sítí, zdraví, role, které jedinci ve stáří plní i očekávání, jež se na ně vztahují. Cílem tohoto článku je popsat a kriticky zhodnotit současné uvažování o genderových nerovnostech ve stáří jak ve vztahu k možným zdrojům, tak k očekáváním, která se na jednotlivce s přibývajícím věkem kladou. Snažím se přitom vyzdvihnout obousměrnost vzájemného procesu konstruování zkušenosti stárnutí a genderové identity a ukázat, že i věk působí jako mechanismu výrazně zasahující do způsobů, jakými je gender artikulován a jaké požadavky se na jeho nositele kladou.

Abstract (in English)

Ageing is process that is always gendered. Gender shapes previous life biography, norms and expectations that are imposed on individuals as they age. On the other hand, the experience of ageing affects the mechanism of creating and negotiating gender identity. This paper critically discusses debates surrounding gender inequalities in old age. These debates often focus on older women as a group that is highly disadvantaged thanks to the combination of sexism and ageism. This paper critically discusses this “problem of old women” and shows alternative views of women’s experience of ageing. It highlights the necessity to understand age and gender as two intertwining systems. It points out that ageing can in many respect open up space to redefinition of gender roles and expectation. The intersection of age and gender can not be seen as a simple combination of two categories but as a process that creates specific social location that can create new forms of inequalities.
