We present an innovative approach of network traffic analysis and visualization based on our previous research and its proof-of-concept, tool NFVis. Our experience shows that network traffic is often significantly different from what network administrators expect. Current tools do not allow the administrators to visualize desired network traffic information in suitable way. We describe a new visualization approach based on visual analytics and insight into network, that enables investigative analysis of network traffic. This approach supports network administrators to gain comprehensive overview of specific part of network traffic at required level of detail. Based on this information, the administrators can more appropriately utilize common security tools to further increase network security. Finally, real-world example of using this approach implementation to increase security in university network is illustrated in brief case study.
