Abstract

In the article the specific Prussian - South Slavic isogloss in designation of "smith" is discussed. All existing etymological attempts are analyzed, finally a new solution is proposed which is based on assumption of adaptation of the Iranian word for "metallic shield", hence "smith" = "shield-maker".

Článek pojednává o specifické pruské - jihoslovanské izoglose s významem "kovář". Všechny dosavadní pokusy o etymologické vysvětlení jsou podrobeny analýze a následně nové vysvětlení je nabídnuto: je založeno na předpokladu, že se jedná o výpůjčku íránského slova pro "kovový štít", tedy "kovář" = "výrobce štítů".
