The status of the postwar international situation was not favourable. Shaken confidence in the possibility of international communication could have been demonstrated by the first postwar World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958. It was the very first international meeting after Second World War at this level, the last one took place in New York in 1939. Nevertheless, in the atmosphere of general skepticism caused by Cold War, USA nuclear tests and space races arose many interesting ideas combining arts, science and technology. The aim was clear: find a new position of the Man in the middle of completely new situation.

Stav poválečné mezinárodní situace byl poměrně neutěšený. Příkladem otřesené důvěry v možnosti mezinárodní komunikace by mohla být světová výstava Expo 1958 v Bruselu, první tohoto druhu v poválečné historii. Expo se mělo stát první velkou událostí na mezinárodní úrovni, která by sjednotila válkou fragmentarizovanou světovou scénu. (Poslední světová výstava se uskutečnila v roce 1939 v New Yorku.) Ovšem i v tomto období zmítaném nejistotou pramenící ze studené války, amerických jaderných testů a začínajícího soupeření o ovládnutí vesmírného prostoru se objevila celá řada tvůrčích idejí kombinujících přístupy umění, vědy a techniky.
