The issue of the paper is the gross metrics, dealing with the distance between strings of phonemes and related problems of opositions between strings generally. It originated in the terms and methods by Marcus, includes the definitions of terms string, gross metrics. The application of the term opposition in the sense of Trubeckoj, Cantineau, Marcus and Brainerd is included.
