Abstract

Cílem studie bylo představit znázornění očistce nejenom zvnějšku (jako médium, symbol, ikonografický typ), ale též zevnitř, jako soubor výrazových prostředků, které jsou zasazeny do širšího kontextu komunikace a vnímání. Očistec jako konfesijně determinované téma totiž vybízí zejména k úvahám o roli výtvarných děl jako médií protireformačního úsilí. Protože dané téma fungovalo jako prostředek náboženské sebedefinice a výchovy, klíčovým bylo zejména téma sdělení obrazu a jeho srozumitelnosti pro dobového recipienta. Studie se proto zabývá zejména: 1) otázkami vizualizace fyzických a duševních kategorií; 2) tématem užívaných symbolů a ikonografických schémat ; 3) otázkami dvou základních komunikačních rovin výtvarného díla: komunikace v obraze a komunikace obrazem; 4) průniky mezi výtvarným uměním a literaturou.

Abstract (in English)

The article treats depictions of purgatory from without (as medium, symbol, iconographic type), as well as from within (as means of expression, which are set in a broader context of communication and perception). Purgatory was a theme determined by religion and thus invites reflections on the role of art as a medium of the Counter Reformation. Given that the purgatory theme functioned as a means of religious self-definition and teaching, the message of the painting and its intelligibility for the contemporary recipient were key. The study therefore considers: 1) the visualization of physical and spiritual categories; 2) the use of symbols and iconographic schemes; 3) the two basic levels of communication in an artwork: communication in the painting and communication through the painting; 4) points of intersection between visual art and literature.
