N2 - Venous diseases of the lower limbs are among the most frequent health problems, they occur in 10-25% of the population. Surgical techniques involving the remedy of these diseases have been well established. Complications following varicose vein surgery are not frequent, however, it is generally the case that the more complicated the venous disease, the greater the chance of complications. Early complications occur within four weeks after surgery and they include inflammation in (surface as well as deep) veins and pulmonary embolus. Late complications involve recurrence which is the result of incorrect diagnosis or surgical tactics. Recurrence depends on the progress of the illness and the occurrence of new reflux in the superficial vein system, it occurs in 4.2 – 22.6% of cases within five years after surgery. Endovenous laser and radiofrequency ablation of superficial veins has become a standard procedure in the treatment of varicose veins. The likelihood of recurrence within five years after surgery is the same as with traditional surgery. Possible complications are documented in literature and various percentages are given: 1. skin burns occur in 11-92% of cases, pain in 4-85%, damage to n. saphenus in 0.5-5%, inflammation in superficial veins in 0-22%, deep vein thrombosis in 0-4%, pulmonary embolus in 0-4%, pigmentation or dermatitis in 15-84%. In the Czech Republic endovenous laser and radiofrequency ablation are not funded by health insurance companies. The number of lawsuits in cases when the outcome of the surgery does not match the clients’ expectations is growing. In these cases the role of guidelines published by specialists is essential, when the surgery does not follow these closely it is both the patient as well as the surgeon who suffer the consequences.
