Presented study targets the contamination of rivers Morava and Drevnice in south-eastern industrial part of the Czech Republic. The results of a year long monthly study characterize the temporal and spatial dynamics of contamination of both sediments and water samples. Specific ecotoxicological in vitro biotests were applied to assess the AhR-mediated (dioxin-like) activity, anti/estrogenicity and anti/androgenicity of all samples. Our results have revealed relatively low activities in aqueous phase, while significant activities were associated with sediments as well as with small particles that are transported in water column. The study emphasizes the important role of abiotic factors in accumulation of pollutants with specific mode of action. The composition of contaminant mixtures present in water and surface sediments exerts strong fluctuations in both space and time. This dynamics needs to be taken into consideration in risk assessment of the contaminated river environments. ER -
