Die Korrespondenz des Pragers Nuntius Antonio Caetani seit September 1608 bis Juli 1609 ist voll von beunruhigenden Nachrichten über die Situation, die sich im Mitteleuropa entwickelt. Die eigene Ursache dieser Probleme Caetani in dem Konflikt gesehen hat, der sich im vollen Maß im Jahre 1608 zwischen dem Kaiser Rudolf und seinem Cousine Erzherzog Mathias entwickelt hat. Als eine Lösung des ganzen Konfliktes hat die Papstdiplomatie schon seit Frühling 1608 eine beiderseitige Versöhnung zwischen beiden Habsburgern vorgeschlagen. Das hat sowohl eine persönliche Aussöhnung, als auch eine neue Machtverteilung einbeziehen sollen. Die Korrespondenz des Nuntius zeigt allerdings, dass es nicht gelungen ist, diese Absicht voll zu verwirklichen – die Macht wurde zwar auf neue Art und Weise verteilt, aber zu der persönlichen Versöhnung ist nicht es gekommen. Die Frage der Versöhnung ist darum auch im Jahre 1609 einer der Hauptpunkte der Papstdiplomatie geblieben.

From September 1608 to June 1609, the correspondence of Prague nuncio Antonio Caetani is full of alarming news about the situation in central Europe which was disadvantageous for the catholic part. Caetani saw the cause of these problems in the crisis that had broken out between Emperor Rudolf II and his brother Archduke Matthias. As a solution, the papal diplomacy suggested mutual reconciliation between the brothers already in spring 1608 which should have included both the compromise and new division of power. The nunciature correspondence shows, however, that this intention was not fully realized – the power was newly divided but the personal reconciliation was not achieved. Therefore, in 1609, the matter of reconciliation still remained one of the main points of the papal diplomacy.
