This well known phenomenon is called the Indentation Size Effect (ISE) and was investigated for four sets of specimen: pure copper, aluminum, cadmium and zinc. Variation of the microhardness with depth of indent was compared with various existing models. For the materials investigated the ISE is not artefact and can be explained by the hypothesis of presence of geometrically necessary dislocations, i.e. dislocations produced to accomodate the gradient in strain surrounding indent.
