Abstract
The paper will focus on characteristics of children that are perceived as important to learn at home in the Czech Republic and other post-socialist countries. Within such context, it will ask four questions: (1) Is it possible to regard such qualities as something that has a stable structure which is transferred from one generation to the other? (2) Are preferences of such qualities influenced by basic socio-demographic variables as well as by some relevant attitudes? (3) Is it possible to construct a general model of educational values which prevail in public opinion? If so, is it traditional-like or modern-like? (4) Are there any clusters among post-socialist countries with regard to these preferred educational qualities and what is the position of the Czech Republic? Answers to these questions will be based on data exploration of three waves of large-scale international comparative surveys carried out in majority of European countries in 1990-91, 1999, and 2008 as European Values Study.
