Abstract
This paper seeks to introduce the aims and the development rationale of the CPV Videoweb (CPV stands for Centrum Pedagogického Výzkumu – Educational Research Centre – see Janík et al. 2009). The CPV Videoweb is an e-learning environment consisting of short video clips of classroom situations supplemented by other materials, comments, various questions and tasks. It is being developed at the Faculty of Education of the Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic and is divided into different thematic areas and modules. The aim is to help prospective teachers develop their observation skills and consequentially be better prepared for what happens in real classrooms. Wallace (1991) suggests proceeding from low-risk activities (such as data collection and analysis) to higher-risk activities (such as microteaching and peer teaching) in teacher education. The main purpose of the CPV Videoweb is to help prepare prospective teachers for the demands of teaching practice by providing a low-risk environment in which they practice their observation skills. CPV Videoweb is an umbrella term for several individual domain-specific Videowebs (e.g. Videoweb of English, Videoweb of Biology etc.). Each of these is further divided into modules (e.g. working with mistakes). There are also domain-general modules in the Videoweb that can be used regardless the subject (e.g. module interaction and communication). The Videowebs are meant to be used within subject didactics courses offered at the Faculty of Education at Masaryk University in Brno (didactics of biology, didactics of physics, etc.).
