Abstract
This paper is focused on identifying the essential characteristics of the technology transfer and its aim is not only to assess the current situation and level of technology transfer in the South Moravian Region but also to find out whether there are any barriers to its further development and eventually to specify possible solutions. The key findings are the problems that can be seen in the present system supporting the technology transfer with the fact that these problems have ultimately a national rather than regional character. It was confirmed that in the Czech Republic the tertiary education sector and the sector of public research is to a considerable extent isolated from the application sphere. Nevertheless some examples of the successful technology transfer exist. In the conclusion, there are mentioned the potential opportunities for further research in this area.
