Abstract
New methods for determination of trace elements in submicroliter sample volumes, substrate-assisted laser desorption (SALD) and laser diode thermal vaporization (LDTV) inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) are presented. In summary, the both SALD and LDTV ICP-MS are suitable for quantitative elemental analysis of low volume samples (typically 100-500 nL) and represent an alternative to nebulizers. Potential advantages are also easy archiving, transportation, option of prearranged calibration sets on substrate and high throughput due to minimization of memory effects. In addition, biological samples, such as metalloproteins or metal complexes can be analyzed in multiple detection modes (SALD ICP-MS, MALDI-MS or fluorescence) from the same sample, which can provide supplementary information, e.g. protein mass or identity.
