Abstract
The goal of this paper is to explore the linearization of the conditional auxiliary in the Czech language of the Baroque period (from 1620 till 1775). The paper is based on data gained from a private corpus of Czech Baroque prints (or representative parts of these prints in some cases) that were printed in the period between 1650 and 1750. In the analyzed texts, auxiliary by behaves like a prototypical enclitic. This is evidenced by the following properties: 1. it is dominant in the post-initial position, 2. it is repelled by the conjunctions a, ale, i, však, avšak, 3. it cannot be combined with negation, 4. it cannot be isolated from the l-participle in its right domain.
