Abstract
This lecture presents my current research on “alternative” sexual morals in the inquisitional register of Jacques Fournier from the years 1318-1325. It is based on four trials: that of Beatrix of Lagleize, Peter Vidal, Arnold of Verniolles, and Grazida Lizier. This research is conceived as a case study of the norm-deviation model in the study of religions. Sexual morals of these four persons are certainly very different from the morals required by Jacques Fournier, but they are rather independent systems or “norms” than deviations from another system or norm (i.e., that of official sexual morals). It is argued here that the model of deviation from a clearly defined norm would distort significantly these cases.
