Analysis and Use of Standard Cryptographic Interfaces
Abstract
Abstract
This thesis investigates the possibility of threshold computation integration into common cryptographic interfaces. Firstly, the work analyzes a set of selected cryptographic interfaces for their capabilities, limitations, and threshold computation integration. The reviewed interfaces are the Cryptoki interface specified by PKCS #11, FIDO specifications, Web eID solution, and Bitcoin Hardware Wallet …more
Thesis description
Several cryptographic interfaces (PKCS#11 Cryptoki, FIDO2 WebAuthn, etc.) allow for invoking cryptographic functionalities performed by various backends, such as secure hardware tokens. These interfaces abstract over backends' technical details so that applications can use them in a unified manner. Implementing new backends for these interfaces can add support for cryptographic operations with arbitrarily stored keys to existing applications without any need for changes to their source code.
The goal of the thesis is to map widely used cryptographic interfaces and analyze their capabilities and limitations. In the practical part, the student will use a selected subset of these interfaces for delegating tasks to a threshold computation platform, allowing immediate application of threshold cryptography in user applications relying on these interfaces. To achieve the goal, the work will include the following:
- Mapping of widely-used cryptographic interfaces and analysis of their capabilities and limitations.
- Design and implementation of a software component that relays requests from a cryptographic interface to a threshold cryptography service.
- Security analysis of the proposed solution.
- Demonstration of the request relaying with at least three different applications.
