Thesis description
The goal of this thesis is to extend the bpftrace tool with the possibility to define and call custom functions (subprograms). Bpftrace is a dynamic tracing tool for Linux systems that defines its own high-level domain-specific language. Bpftrace DSL code is translated into eBPF bytecode and run by the in-kernel eBPF interpreter. Within the thesis, the student will:
  • Study the eBPF technology with a focus on the concept of program local functions.
  • Propose the syntax and the semantics of function definitions and function calls suitable for the bpftrace DSL.
  • Implement the support for functions into multiple stages of the bpftrace tool such as the parser, the semantic analyzer, the eBPF code generation, etc.
  • Introduce unit and end-to-end tests covering the features of the implemented solution.
  • Discuss the limitations of the proposed approach and outline their possible solutions.
