During life, somatic cells deal with stress conditions evoked by unfavorable factors within a cell or in the tissue microenvironment. The cell responds to stress conditions with signaling pathways specific for individual organelles. The most studied molecular pathway is unfolded protein response (UPR) induced in the endoplasmic reticulum. However, a similar signaling pathway occurs also in mitochondria. This bachelor thesis focuses at the canonical UPR in the endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondrial UPR and interactions of the endoplasmic reticulum with mitochondria. The molecular basis is then discussed in the context of selected diseases, where mitochondrial and ER signaling are involved.
