The main objective of the thesis was a compilation of a
bilingual English-Czech glossary of climate change terminology.
More specifically, a glossary of terms not covered in the 2009
revised version of the leading bilingual dictionary concerned
with the environment, i.e. Anglicko-český a česko-anglický
slovník životního prostředí a udržitelného rozvoje. The English
terms were extracted from various monolingual climate change
glossaries, the main source being the glossary of the Synthesis
Report of the Fourth Assessment Report published by the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change in 2007.
The thesis itself first presents readers with background
information concerning the key notions term and terminology. In
this rather theoretical part, readers are, apart from other
issues, also made familiar with practical aspects of
terminology such as terminology standardization and terminology
management.
As far as the practical output of the thesis is concerned, the
translation of the terms in question were searched for using a
web search engine. Such candidate terms were then evaluated for
their credibility and it was also verified whether they are
used in the Czech monolingual specialist sources.
The performed research revealed not only a lack of bilingual
sources but also a substantial lack of monolingual Czech
sources dealing with or using the new climate change
terminology. Inconsistency in the use of the terminology was
detected too. It is for this reason that the bilingual glossary
contains both English entries provided with more than one Czech
translation and English entries without a Czech equivalent
term. The aim is to provide authors of the Anglicko-český a
česko-anglický slovník životního prostředí a udržitelného
rozvoje with the glossary so they may consider the inclusion of
these terms in it and contribute to the improvement of the
climate change terminology status in the Czech Republic.
