Based on the ongoing development of the CHC theory of cognitive
abilities, socio-emotional abilities have also become part of
it – emotional intelligence is included as one of the broad
abilities. The diploma thesis addresses emotion recognition
from facial expressions and orientation in emotionally laden
words, as it is one branch of the model of emotional
intelligence. Building on the work of the team developing the
Invenio diagnostic system, the analyses serve to validate
methods for measuring the level of these abilities.
Specifically, these are the Ferdo and Profesor Zíravý subtests
of the Frída a podivuhodná galerie test of socio-emotional
competencies. In addition, the thesis explores the relationship
between overall levels of verbal ability and emotional
competencies, as emotion recognition is tied to the ability to
label emotions. The results confirm the potential of both
subtests to identify students with deficits in socio-emotional
abilities. At the same time, results show that the ability to
navigate emotionally laden words can somewhat indicate the
manifestations of emotional intelligence. Overall, verbal
abilities could play a significant role in understanding
emotional content.
