Comments: The topic of burnout has been a heatedly debated subject in the community of
psychologists and professional educators. However, so far it has not really been so concretely
addressed as it is in this master's thesis. Ms Kateřina Šebková has rightly demonstrated the
serious impact of the burnout syndrome on the quality of teachers' work and their motivation
to continue in their careers as educators. This work, which is hopefully not the last one in this
field, reaches out to the educational community with recommendations and preventive measures
which should be taken in order to help the young teachers to handle the demanding work
load in this profession. I highly apprecate the contribution of this study.
The theoretical part of the thesis presents a thorough overview of the research in the field of
the burnout syndrome, demonstrating the seriousness of this social issue especially affecting
educators.
The practical, research part presents findings based on interviews conducted with five elementary
school teachers of the English language. The interviews were analysed qualitatively using the
Maslach Burnout Inventory version for educators. The findings clearly demonstrate the burnout
syndrome present in the mental state of all interviewees at different levels of seriousness, depending
on various factors e.g. involvement in school projects, paper work, years of experience,
pupils' class behaviour and discipline issues, moral and financial appreciation from the school
management and support from family and friends. I would have welcomed a higher number of
participants in the study, in order to get deeper in this phenomenon. However, I do understand
the difficulty in finding teachers who would willingly participate in such a study.
My only other reservations to the thesis is the quality of the English language in terms of the
right word choice, use of the articles and verb tenses.
