The master’s thesis analyzes active and passive vocabulary of early age children. It is divided into four chapters. The first three chapters focus on the theoretical knowledge, the fourth chapter is devoted to the practical part. The first chapter defines basic terminology relating to communication, speech and language. Degrees in speech development and development of vocabulary in the language level context are defined. It also includes the description of the child’s development in terms of ontogenetic developmental psychology. The second chapter deals with the development of communication skills at early age children. Role of the family and importance of basic senses in speech development are described here. Two other subsections describe speech development potentials in the family and institutional facilities that may also be involved in speech development.The third chapter focuses on the deficits in language development and speech intervention. The first two subsections concentrate on impaired and delayed speech development, further use of communication strategies in the speech development. The last subsection describes the system of speech therapy in the Czech Republic. The fourth chapter is devoted to the research study. Methodology and objectives of the research are stated there. Another subsection is devoted to the research and analysis. The conclusion summarizes the findings of the research project.
