"Byzantine" Crowns: between East, West and the Ritual
Abstract
Tato diplomová práce analyzuje koruny mezi 9. a 13. stoletím, které byly vytvořeny v Byzanci nebo přejaly dekorativní motivy charakteristické pro byzantský císařský rituál. Důraz je kladen na jejich roli v korunovačním rituálu a v císařské diplomacii. Práce sa věnuje otázce zda koruny používané jako diplomatické dary měly moc přenést byzantské prvky do korunovací v cizích královstvích a zda se jejich výzdoba a ikonografie měnily v souladu s jejich funkcí.
Abstract
This thesis is analyzing crowns between 9th and 13th century that were created in Byzantium or adopted decorative motifs characteristic for the Byzantine imperial ritual. The focus is on their role in the coronation ritual and in the imperial diplomacy. The thesis discusses whether the crowns used as diplomatic gifts had the power to introduce Byzantine elements to the coronations in foreign kingdoms and whether their decoration and iconography changed in accordance with their function.
