    Genome comparison
    is a powerful tool to unravel biology of uncultivable pathogens. In our laboratory, genome structure and function of pathogenic Treponema species and subspecies has been studied since 2001. Pathogenic treponemes similar to syphilis treponeme cause a number of human diseases including yaws (caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies pertenue; TPE), bejel (endemic syphilis; subspecies endemicum; TEN) and pinta (Treponema carateum). All the sequenced genomes have similar gene order and only minimal differences in the genome sequences suggest their common and relatively recent origin.

    Bacteriocins
    are antimicrobial proteins or polypeptides produced by bacteria and include diverse molecules in the terms of size, microbial targets, mode of action, release from producer cells, and immunity mechanisms of producers. Bacteriocins include toxic exoproteins (colicins) or peptides (microcins) produced by several strains of the family Enterobacteriaceae. From a set of characterized colicins, several types were found to specifically inhibit pathogenic bacteria and thus could have a medical impact. The detailed understanding of specific colicin-bacterium interaction should allow construction of novel colicin variants with directed antimicrobial specificity.
