Scientific and Research Activities
  • 2019 - 2023: Head of the project "Modelling the future: Understanding the impact of technology on adolescent’s well-being (FUTURE)". The project will develop a complex integrative theory depicting the short- and long- term impacts of technology usage on adolescents’ physical, psychological, and social well-being.

  • 2018 – 2020: Head of the project “The innovation and adaptation of authentication technologies for a safe digital environment” financed by the Technological Agency of the Czech Republic (TAČR).

  • 2015 - 2017: Head of the project: "The thin line between disorder and a healthy lifestyle: Investigating the online behavior of today's youth" financed by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GAČR). The study aims to map the online behavior and ICT use of young people suffering from eating disorder to assess professional care providers' knowledge of and reflections on the online behavior and ICT use of their clients/patients, and to map the differences between youth at risk for an eating disorder and those who instead enjoy a healthy lifestyle

  • 2014 - 2016: Head of the project: "The experimental research on online behavior of ICT users", using the perspectives of social sciences, law and informatics" financed by Grant Agency of Masaryk University. The project focuses at ICT user's behavior regarding IT safety. The research plan includes experimentally exposing ICT users to different ways of ensuring IT security (technical ways, trainings, information on the new legislation norm, directives).

  • 7/2012 - 7/2015: Head of the project: "Creating an interdisciplinary team to research the Internet and new media" - European Social Fund and Czech Ministry of Education - CZ.1.07/2.3.00/20.0184.The project is focused on research related to the social-psychological developmental, sociological and political implications of the use of information and communication technologies.

  • 2012 - 2014: Head of the project: "The factors of excessive online gaming and their evolution over time" GA ČR (P407/12/1831).

  • 11/2011 - 10/2014: Head of WP4: "Exploring children's understanding of risk" within EU Kids Online III project leaded by prof. Sonia Livingstone (LSE) which included 33 European countries. The WP4 includes a qualitative study focusing on the question of how children from various European countries understand online risks and react to them. David Šmahel was responsible for the general coordination, methodology and outputs of the comparative qualitative research across 9 European countries and Australia.

  • 2011 - 2013: Head of the project: "Risks of Internet Use among Children and Adolescents" which was financed by Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GAČR).

  • 2009 - 2012: Member of the MC Committee COST ACTION IS0801: "Cyberbullying: coping with negative and enhancing positive uses of new technologies, in relationships in educational settings".

  • 2008 - 2011: National leader: "EU Kids Online II" which was financed by the Safer Internet Plus Programme. Its primary goal was the comparative empiric survey among 25 European countries of Internet use and risk behaviour in the children's population (www.eukindsonline.net).

  • 2007 - 2009: Head of the project: "Weblog: a window into adolescent's soul" supported by "The Grant Agency of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic" (KJB708140702).
