Course objectives
The course is a follow-up to the course Insurance. Its aim is to acquaint students with insurance economics and with economy of an insurance company. In more detail, the course brings an explanation to the risk management in commercial insurance companies including the ways of financial risk coverage. It also explains technical reserves, capital stock, solvency and commercial insurance company management. The course deals with the conditions of the commercial insurance company’s financial health and specifics of their financial analysis with the emphasis on ratio indicators and rating of the commercial insurance companies.
The main objectives of the course are the following:
- to provide students with knowledge of insurance economics and economics of the insurance company;
- to made students aware of the fundamental principles of commercial insurance company’s operation as an entrepreneurial entity;
- to explain the need of sufficient capital;
- to make students familiar with evaluating the requested structure of owned and managed property;
- to analyse economic results of the commercial insurance company using basic financial statements which comply with the specifics of the chart of accounts used by the commercial insurance company.

  • 1. Introduction to course. Legal aspects of insurance business.
  • 2. Economy of insurance business. Insurance economics. Basic terms of insurance economics.
  • 3. Insurance and risk. Risk definition and classification. Relation between risk and insurance. Insurance protection and its assessment.
  • 4. Risk management. Risk management methodology. Risk prevention. Risk identification and assessment. Covering of risk.
  • 5. Financial covering of risk by insurance. Insurance need and interest. Advantages and disadvantages of insurance coverage. Risk management in insurance company.
  • 6. Commercial insurance company as entrepreneurial entity. Economic aspects of insurance business. Technical reserves of insurance company. Investment activities of commercial insurance company.
  • 7. Capital ratio of insurance company. Capital stock of insurance company. Solvency of insurance company. Capital and reserves determination. Economic balance of insurance.
  • 8. Insurance company management. Revenues, costs and result of insurance company. Annual report of insurance company.
  • 9. Financial health of insurance company. Financial analysis of insurance company. Concept, types and methods of financial analysis. Ratio indices classification. Specific nature of financial analysis of insurance company. Rating of insurance company.

  • 13. Insurance economy and economy of insurance company in insurance business – presentation given by employee of insurance company.

  • 1. Introduction to seminars, seminar paper topics and requirements for seminar paper and presentation. Making up teams and seminar paper assignment.
  • 2. Comparison of basic terms according to the General and special policy conditions regarding life, casualty, sickness, proprietary and liability for damage insurance. Brief characteristics of insurance products.
  • 3. Economic aspects of motor vehicle insurance. Influence of burden of losses on commercial insurance company economy. Bonus-malus policy of commercial insurance company.

Assessment methods
Lectures and seminars keep taking place in accordance with the above mentioned topics. Seminars are divided into thirteen blocks. In-term test 1-3 are scheduled for the 4th, 8th and 12th week and are compulsory. For a minimum success rate to pass see the system of knowledge checking and requirements for completion of the course according to the course accreditation. The course is completed by a written test. The final grade consists of the Final test (60%) + Seminar paper (20%) + In-term tests (20%).
