Prerequisites
Course "Research of migration and ethnicity" is prepared for students of MA level of Sociology studies at the Faculty of Social Studies. Students can obtain 12 credits. Workload of the course therefore is 24 hours per week, it means 312 hours of work together.

Course objectives
Course offers insides into ongoing researches of migration and ethnicity that is being conducted at the department of sociology. Among outcomes of the course students will find - elaboration of the research project, analyses of Czech policies and strategic documents in the field of migration and integration of ethnic minorities. Students have a chance to discuss recent challenges of migration and ethnicity research not only with members of the department, but also with experts from the field from abroad. In 2012 Dr. Martin Kahanec has been invited to lecture.
Syllabus
  • I. block (1st week - September 17, 2013): DR. MICHAL VAŠEČKA: RESEARCH OF ETHNICITY AND MIGRATION AS A SPECIFIC TYPE OF RESEARCH Seminar will focus on analysis of factors that influence quality of social research of phenomenons such as ethnicity and migration. II. block (3rd week - October 10, 2013): DR. ADÉLA SOURALOVÁ: GENDER, MIGRATUION, AND „DOMESTIC WORK“ (CASE OF THE CZECH „ANOMALY“: CZECH NANIES IN VIETNAMIES FAMILIES) Seminar will focus on gendered and gendering dimensions of migration and will be covering growing demand on so-called „migrant domestic workers“ and au pair. III. block (5th week - October 15, 2013): DR. MICHAL NEKORJAK: UKRAINIAN MIGRANTS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC AND THEIR ETHNIC ECONOMY. Seminar will focus on Ukrainian migration into the Czech republic during last 20 years and will economic strategies of Ukrainian migrants. IV. block (7th week - October 29, 2013): DR. MICHAL VAŠEČKA: SPECIFICITY OF THE RESEARCH IN MARGINALIZED ROMA COMMUNITIES. Seminar will be dealing with specific group of Roma and marginalized Roma communities as a subject of research that display certain specificities. V. block (9th week - November 12, 2013): DR. KATEŘINA SIDIROPULU JANKŮ: O LEPERIBEN. EPISTEMOLOGY AND ETHICS OF AN APPLIED RESEARCH Seminar will focus on relations of epistemologic background of a research and ethic dimensions of investigation. VI. block (11th week - November 26, 2013): DR. MICHAL VAŠEČKA: RESEARCH OF ANTISEMITISM. Seminar will focus on analysis of antisemitism as a specific social phenomenon that is not primarilly interconnected with objects of antisemitism and systematically develops into complex system of hatred. VII. block (13th week - December 10, 2013): DR. MARTIN KAHANEC: SOCIAL AND LABOR MARKET INTEGRATION OF MIGRANTS: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES. Seminar deals with social and economic integration of migrants as a social and economic challenge for a modern society.

Teaching methods
The course is one-semester long, organized in 7 blocks. Each seminar will last 180 minutes. All materials of the course can be find in an electronic form within the IS system.
Assessment methods
Evaluation: Students submit 6 short studies, each 400-700 words long. These studies will serve students also as supporting materials for the exam, as well as materials for discussion during seminars.
