Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to describe and explain terms related to body systems (namely skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, hematic, lymphatic, gastrointestinal, and respiratory systems), their organs, functions and disorders; use practical medical vocabulary (namely the language of communication in hospital, surgery, and when examining patients; language of describing treatment, medication, medical instruments, and machines); should be able to apply medical language in communication with patients, interpret medical texts, create medical documentation; use grammatical structures typical of medical language.
Syllabus
  • MEDICAL ENGLISH. Syllabus.
  • 1st week: Introduction. UNIT 1: The Human Body. Grammar: Definite Article, Indefinite Article, Absence of Articles; Plural, much - many, little - few. Conversation: Theme: At the Doctor's. Listening: Medical Examination.
  • 2nd week: UNIT 2: Musculoskeletal System I. Grammar: The Construction "there is/are", Word Order of the English Sentence. Conversation: Theme: Injuries. Listening: Scoliosis.
  • 3rd week: UNIT 2: Musculoskeletal System II. Grammar: Passive Voice I. Listening: Injuries.
  • 4th week: UNIT 3: Cardiovascular System I. Grammar: Passive Voice II. Listening: Internal Medicine - Heart.
  • 5th week: UNIT 3: Cardiovascular System II.Grammar: Modal Verbs, their Periphrastic Forms. Conversation: Theme: In Hospital.
  • 6th week: UNIT 4: Haematic and Lymphatic System I. Grammar: Adverbial Clauses of Purpose; Transgressives. Listening: Feeling Ill.
  • 7th week: MID-TERM REVISION TEST
  • 8th week: UNIT 4: Haematic and Lymphatic System II.Grammar: Basic Verbal Tenses (Present, Past, Future). Conversation: Theme: Feeling Ill. Listening: Blood.
  • 9th week: UNIT 5: Gastrointestinal System (Mouth, Pharynx, Esophagus, Stomach, Intestines). Grammar: Conditional Sentences. Conversation: Theme: Endoscopy. Listening: Body Weight and Diet.
  • 10th week: UNIT 5: Gastrointestinal System (Accessory Organs of Digestion). Grammar: Comparison of Adjectives and Adverbs. Telling the Time in English. Conversation: Theme: Types of Medication. Listening: Pills and Tablets.
  • 11th week: UNIT 6: Respiratory System. Grammar: Personal, Possessive, Interrogative, Demonstrative and Replacive, and Indefinite Pronouns. Conversation: Theme: Symptoms and Signs. Listening: Dyspnea.
  • 12th week: UNIT 6: Respiratory System. Grammar: Relative, Reflexive and Emphasising Pronouns.
  • 13th week: REVISION.
  • 14th week: Credit Test, Credit Acknowledgement.

Assessment methods
Attendance is compulsory. Two absences are tolerated provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Department of Studies. It is highly recommended to make up for the absence in the same week. Assessment is based on the results of the credit test and attendance. Students get two credits for successful completion of the course.

Information on completion of the course: Pro studenty se státní jazykovou zkouškou, příp. jejím ekvivalentem (TOEFL, FCE apod.) je účast na výuce v podzimním semestru nepovinná. Předmět si nicméně zaregistrují a na konci semestru jej ukončí složením zápočtového testu.
