Prerequisites
CJVAT01 English - entrance test
The minimum expected entry level is B1 according to CEFR. As the students normally enrol in the course in their second year of study, those below the required entry level are recommended to use their first university year to improve their communicative competence in English.

Course objectives
The course objective is to develop students' receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) English language skills and to enhance their knowledge of selected grammar chapters at level B2. The course also seeks to develop in students knowledge of specialized discipline-specific vocabulary and skills for effective communication with patients.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to describe and explain terms related to body parts and body systems (namely skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, hematic, lymphatic,digestive, respiratory, and integumentary systems),their organs, functions and disorders; use practical medical vocabulary (namely the language of communication in hospital, surgery, and when examining and diagnosing patients; language of describing treatment, medication, medical instruments, and machines); should be able to apply medical language in communication with patients, interpret medical texts; use grammatical structures typical of specialist medical English.
Syllabus
  • Week 1 Introduction into the study of Medical English, e-learning component of the course, course completion requirements, testing and assessment methods, recommended literature and other (online) study sources.
  • Week 2 The Human Body. Topic: Naming Parts of the Body.
  • Week 3 Examining a Patient. Taking a History. Topic: At the Doctor's.
  • Week 4 Muscular and Skeletal Systems - Anatomy.
  • Week 5 Muscular and Skeletal Systems - Pathological Conditions.
  • Week 6 Cardiovascular and Hematic Systems - Anatomy. Topic: Injuries.
  • Week 7 Midterm test.
  • Week 8 Cardiovascular and Hematic Systems. Pathological Conditions.
  • Week 9 Digestive System.Anatomy and Pathological Conditions.
  • Week 10 Respiratory System. Anatomy and Pathological Conditions.
  • Week 11 Integumentary System.Anatomy. and Pathological Conditions.
  • Week 12 Integumentary System.Pathological Conditions.
  • Week 13 Revision.
  • Week 14 Credit test.
  • Grammar chapters covered: passive voice, relative clauses, question formation.
  • Besides the above-mentioned topic areas and grammar chapters, the course develops in students the proficient use of four language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing).

Assessment methods
Attendance is compulsory. Two unexcused absences are tolerated, absences beyond this quota need to be properly excused by the Study Department with the note displayed in the MU Information System. Course credits awarded based on the course attendance and the passing of the credit test which covers the areas studied during semester (specialist topics, patient communication,selected grammar chapters)and looks at selected language skills (reading,listening). The pass mark is 60%. Course participants are expected to have mastered the B1 CEFR prior to their participation in the course.

Information on completion of the course: Pro studenty se státní jazykovou zkouškou, příp. jejím ekvivalentem (TOEFL, FCE apod.) je účast na výuce v podzimním semestru nepovinná. Předmět si nicméně zaregistrují a na konci semestru jej ukončí složením zápočtového testu.
