Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to describe and explain terms regarding the following topics: careers in nutritional therapy, healthy diet, food groups and food pyramid, obesity and myths about obesity, fats, cholesterol and carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and proteins, nutrition and diseases, exercise and nutrition; use practical medical vocabulary; apply medical language in doctor-patient, nutritional therapist-client, doctor-doctor, and doctor-nursing staff communication, interpret medical texts, present and discuss specialized topics, write motivational letters; use grammatical structures typical for medical and academic language.

  • 1st week: Úvod, e-learningová podpora předmětu, požadavky, hodnocení, opakování.
  • 2nd week: Presentations and Public Speaking in English, Language of Presentations I.
  • 3rd week: Presentations and Public Speaking in English, Language of Presentations II.
  • 4th week: Careers in Nutritional Therapy . Student Presentations.
  • 5th week: Guidelines for a Healthy Diet. Student Presentations.
  • 6th week: Food Groups and Food Pyramid. Student Presentations.
  • 7th week: Obesity. Myths about Obesity. Student Presentations.
  • 8th week: MIDTERM TEST
  • 9th week: Fats, Cholesterol, Carbohydrates. Student Presentations.
  • 10th week: Vitamins, Minerals, Proteins. Student Presentations.
  • 11th week: Nutrition and Diseases: Eating Disorders, Diabetes, Celiac Disease, Cancer. Student Presentations.
  • 12th week: Exercise and Nutrition, Diets. Student Presentations.
  • 13th week: OPAKOVÁNÍ
  • 14th week: FINAL TEST
  • Grammar taught in the course: conditional clauses, direct and indirect speech.
  • In addition to the above mentioned topics and grammar, the course will also focus on the mastery of communicative skills - i.e. speaking, listening, reading, and writing - on the B2 level of the European Reference Framework.

Assessment methods
The above mentioned topics will be consolidated using all the study skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Supplementary materials used in the seminars (hard copies, electronic documents etc.) will be provided by the lecturer. The course takes the form of seminars. Attendance is compulsory. Two absences are tolerated provided a letter of excuse is handed in at the Office of Studies. Assessment is based on the results of the final examination (testing the knowledge from the autumn and spring semesters) and attendance. The examination consists of two parts, written and oral. The prerequisite for the written part is a presentation on a medical topic during the semester. The prerequisite of the oral part is to reach a minimal score of 65 per cent in the written part of the examination.

Information on completion of the course: Studenti se státní jazykovou zkouškou, příp. jejím ekvivalentem (TOEFL, FCE apod.) mohou vykonat zkoušku kdykoliv během semestru.
