Prerequisites
The intermediate student (Level B2) can understand the main ideas of texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including discussions cocnerning his/her specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Course objectives
Students will develop all receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing)language skills together with their grammar and vocabulary awarness within the B2 level by means of the academic topics related to education, school and leisure time activities. Students will also practice academic skills e.g., writing an application for a scholarship, expressiong opinion, justifying the point, and giving oral presentations.

  • W 1 Consultation week;
  • W 2 Introduction, Oral presentations instructions; Mock test;
  • W 3 – 6: Issues related to education, school and leisure time
  • W 3 Education, school, after-school activities( (terminology related to education, school environment and educational systems)
  • W 4 Alterative educational methods (Montessori school, home education)
  • W 5 Motivation in education, hidden curriculum
  • W 6 Pupils/students with special needs – learning difficulties;
  • Grammar and TP: W 3 Present tenses W 4 Past tenses W 5 Future in English (will, going to, present continuous; time clauses: when, as soon as… I am), Word formation: abstract vocabulary W 6 Present perfect simple and continuous, sentence transformations I (tenses); W 7 Academic skills: Application for a scholarship, project statement (layout + structure; punctuation; linking words); Grammar and TP: The passive, Sentence transformations II; W 8 Academic skills: Language of presentation + presentation skills Grammar and TP: Modals I (can, have to, allowed to, must, mustn’t, should), Conditionals; W 9 Progress test + in-class correction; W 10 – 13 Oral presentations + follow-up discussions; Grammar and TP: W 10 Word order – indirect questions,reported speech W 11 Prepositional phrases I W 12 Phrasal verbs I W 13 Make X do;

Assessment methods
Weekly 90-minute seminars
In-term assignments: 1) Project statement + application for a scholarship;
2)Oral presentation (assigned in W 8)
Credit requirements: 1) Attendance 2) Completed in-term assignments 3) Credit test (3 parts: listening, reading comprehension, use of English; level B2, passing limit 50%)
