Prerequisites
Pass in B1-level English examination. (The B1-level student can understand the main ideas of texts on both concrete and abstract topics and can discuss the topics related to his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with partners without strain for either party. Can produce an essay on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options).

Course objectives
Students will develop all receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing)language skills together with their grammar and vocabulary awareness within the B2 level by means of academic topics related to education, school, leisure time activities, and drug prevention. Students will be able to practice academic skills, e.g., write an application for a scholarship abroad, express opinion, justify the point, and give oral presentations. Students work independently on special in-term assignments and get ready for the in-class presentation which is a part of the final credit assessment.
Syllabus
  • W 1 Discussion. Introductory TEST (Reading, Listening, Grammar and Vocabulary Revision, Writing) W 2 Test feedback. Education in the Czech Republic compared with the UK and US systems; Conditional sentences. W 3 Education, school, after-school activities. Motivation in education. Terminology related to education, school environment and educational systems. Grammar - reported speech. W 4 Alterative educational methods (Montessori school, home education, etc.). Advantages, disadvantages. W 5 Academic skills - Application for a scholarship abroad (useful websites, filling-in application form) W 6 Academic skills - Application for a scholarship abroad (writing a cover letter). Formal style of writing. W 7 Cover letters (structure, contents, language. Grammar - sentence transformations W 8 Revision. Grammar and vocabulary progress test. W 9 In-class presentations (Applying for a scholarship abroad). Grammar - reported speech. W 10 In-class presentations. Grammar - Phrasal Verbs W 11 Presentations + follow-up discussions. Problem addiction (drug abuse, preventive programmes, streetwork). W 12 Presentations + follow-up discussions. Problem addiction (drug abuse, preventive programmes, streetwork). W 13 Problem addiction. Drug abuse treatment, streetwork). Grammar revision. W 14 Credit TEST. Grammar - tenses, time clauses, conditional sentences, prepositional phrases (incl. gerund and infinitive), reported speech, sentence transformation, phrasal verbs; word order, word formation. Vocabulary - Issues related to EDUCATION, SCHOOL and LEISURE TIME. DRUG ABUSE TREATMENT Academic skills: Speaking - language of presentation, presentation skills. Writing - Applying for a scholarship abroad. Credit requirements 1) Attendance + completed in-term assignments 2) Project - Cover letter + Application for a scholarship abroad to be submitted by mid-November to Odevzdavarna; 3) In-class presentation (to be carried out by the end of November!), Applying for a Scholarship 4) Credit B2 test (4 parts: Reading and listening comprehension. Grammar and vocabulary. Writing a formal letter. Passing limit 50%.
