Prerequisites
Students enrolling on the course are expected to achieve at least a good pre-intermediate level of English (= Level B1 of the CEFR). The pre-intermediate student (B1) understands the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters. Can enter unprepared into conversation about familiar topics and connect ideas in a simple way. Can provide information, take messages, give simple instructions and deal with less routine problems, e.g. complaints. Can describe events, experiences, hopes and ambitions; give reasons, explanations of plans and opinions.

Course objectives
In this level B2 English course, students will consolidate their language skills from the Bachelor's foreign language course (level B1), develop terminology related to the sphere of Special Needs Education and enhance academic skills by means of SNE topics/issues (reading comprehension, discussing, summarizing, argumentation, giving presentations, writing, listening). Students will also be required to show their awarness of basic level B2 grammar.
Syllabus
  • Consultation 1: Course introduction and requirements; Mock test; Visual impairment, integration/inclusion into mainstream schools. Preparation for C2: Vocabulary list I, Text 1, 2 – comprehension sheet. Grammar: Present simple, present continuous. Past simple, past continuous. Consultation 2: Hearing and speech impairment, integration/inclusion into mainstream schools. Preparation for C3: Vocabulary list II, Text 3, 4 – comprihension sheet, essay. Grammar: Present perfect simple, present perfect continuous. Expressing future: will, going to, may, might. Consultation 3: Behavioural disorders (ADHD) and specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia...), coping strategies, remedial ways. Preparation for C4: Vocabulary list III, Text 5, 6 – comprehension sheet. Grammar: Modals: can, could, must/have to, may, mustn’t. Articles: a/an, the, - . Consultation 4: Autistic spectrum disorders. Mental impairment (Down syndrome). Preparation for C5: Gathering relevant sources and materials, preparing a 15-minute presentation + questions for discussion. Grammar: Countable, uncountable nouns, much X many. some, any, no. The passive: present simple, past simple, will. First and second conditional. Consultation 5: Oral presentations. Exam period: Test. Students who have not completed in-term assignments during the particular semester will not be allowed to take the Final Test! (Student, který nemá splněné průběžné úkoly z jednotlivých témat v rámci daného semestru, nemůže skládat zkoušku z tohoto předmětu!)

Teaching methods
Consultations in the form of seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (acitvities developing students' awarness of language skills and systems within B2 level - independent reading and listening tasks; grammar and vocabulary practice, discussions and presentations, e-learning for grammar and vocabulary practice, etc.
Assessment methods
Level B2 language course. Credit requirements: 1)Attendance and active participation in consultations (one absence due to serious reasons is acceptable). 2)Completed in-term tasks. 3)Meeting deadlines. 4)Oral performance. 5)Test: listening, reading, writing, use of English, SNE terminology. In-term tasks: 1)Preparation for consultations (text analysis, comprehension sheets, vocabulary). 2)Grammar for self-study (IS). Pro ukončení předmětu jsou předepsány v semestru průběžné kontroly (ustni prezentace, pisemne ukoly, atd.), jejichž výsledky jsou započítávány do závěrečného hodnocení. Student, který nemá splněné průběžné úkoly z jednotlivých témat v rámci daného semestru, nemůže skládat zkoušku z tohoto předmětu!
