Prerequisites
Students enrolling on the course are expected to achieve at least a good pre-intermediate level of English (= Level B1 of the CEFR). The pre-intermediate student (B1) understands the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters, can enter unprepared into conversation about familiar topics and connects ideas in a simple way. He or she can also provide information, take messages, give simple instructions and deal with less routine problems, e.g. complaints. Can describe events, experiences, hopes and ambitions; give reasons, explanations of plans and opinions.

Course objectives
In this B2 level English course, the aim is to consolidate the language skills from the Bachelor's foreign language course (level B1), develop terminology related to the sphere of Special Needs Education and enhance academic skills by means of SNE topics/issues (reading comprehension, discussing, summarizing, argumentation, giving presentations, writing, listening). Students will also be required to show their awarness of level B2 grammar.
Syllabus
  • Consultation 1: Course introduction and requirements; Visual impairment. Preparation for C2: Text 1, 2 + reading comprehension sheets. Grammar: Present simple, present continuous. Past simple, past continuous. Future in English. Consultation 2: Hearing impairment and speech disorders. Preparation for C3: Text 3, 4 + RCS. Grammar: Present perfect simple, present perfect continuous, passive forms, modals. Consultation 3: Behavioural disorders (ADHD). Preparation for C4: Text 5, 6 + RCS. Grammar: Conditionals, articles, countable and uncountable nouns. Consultation 4: Specific learning difficulties. Autistic spectrum disorders. Preparation for C5: Gathering relevant sources and materials, preparing a 10-minute presentation + questions for discussion. Grammar: A, some, any, no; reported speech, prepositional phrases. Consultation 5: Intellectual disabilities (Down syndrome), Oral presentations. Grammar: Transitional expressions, phrasal verbs. Exam period: Test. Students who have not completed in-term assignments during the particular semester will not be allowed to take the Final Test! (Studenti, kteří nesplní průběžné úkoly z jednotlivých témat v rámci daného semestru, nemohou skládat zkoušku z tohoto předmětu!)

Teaching methods
Consultations in the form of seminars designed for teaching English for specific and academic purposes (acitvities developing students' language skills plus grammar and vocabulary knowledge at level B2: independent reading, listening and writing tasks; class discussions and presentations; grammar and vocabulary exercises; on-line quizzes for practising grammar and vocabulary, etc.).
Assessment methods
Level B2 language course. Credit requirements: 1) Attendance and active participation in consultations (one absence due to serious reasons is acceptable). 2) Completed in-term tasks (assigned readings + submitted reading comprehension sheets, grammar exercises, mini-presentations, etc.) 3) Meeting deadlines. 4) Final exam: A) Written test + SNE terminology: listening (14 marks), reading (12 marks), use of English (20 marks), writing (14 marks), terminology (10 marks). Total: 70 marks. Pass mark: 65%. B) Oral part comprising 1) monologue (introducing student's specialisation/focus within SNE) - 1 minute + 2) spoken interaction between two students on a topic relating to SNE - 6 minutes. Total: 30 marks; PASS MARK = 65 % (20 marks). Students who have not met requirements 1) – 3) are not allowed to sit the written part of the exam. Only those students who have passed the written part can take the oral part of the exam. Student, který nesplní požadavky 1) až 3) nemůže skládat zkoušku z tohoto předmětu, resp. její písemnou část. Ústní část zkoušky mohou absolvovat výhradně ti studenti, kteří úspěšně absolvují její písemnou část.
