Course objectives
The aim of the course is to combine knowledge from the field of education of individuals with hearing impairment with other areas such as speech therapy, psychology and medical areas (ENT, phoniatrics).
Syllabus
  • Basic syllabus: The aim and the subject of education of individuals with hearing impairment. Development of pedagogical field. Personality of individual with hearing impairment from historical perspective. Development of communication abilities in children with severe hearing impairment. Communication forms of individuals with hearing impairment. Screening and counselling in the field. Diagnostics in the education of individuals with hearing impairment. Hearing aids and other technical aids used in education of individuals with hearing impairment. Speech therapy in individuals with hearing impairment. Characteristics of methodical approaches in education of individuals with hearing impairment. Deaf community - philosophy, personality of the Deaf, organization of the Deaf, study possibilities and employment, basic principles of communication with hearing impaired. Specialized syllabus: Language development of individuals with hearing impairment, development of communication abilities in children with hearing loss, speech development in terms of content, articulation, grammar, modulating speech factors. Communication of individuals with hearing impairment - characteristics of individual communication forms - finger alphabet, lip-reading, Czech sign language and other visual-motor ways of communication of hearing impaired individuals in intercultural and intracultural communication Sign language - system of means for mutual communication and information transfer, basic linguistic terminology. Aspects of natural language. Language communication in Deaf society. Teoretical basis of sign language - structure and functioning of the sign language. Relationship between speaking and signing language. Specific aspects of sign language, verbal and nonverbal aspects of sign langage. Expressions of sign language.  Sign language translation - basic information about interpreting. Communicative features of simultaneous interpretation from sign language to Czech and vice versa. Ethical Code of the Sign Language Interpreter.  Educational programs for people with hearing impairment - historical perspective, oral education programs, total communication, programs with dominant language sign language, bilingual education, Early Hearing Language Education program  Hearing impairment and other combinated disability - combinations including deafblindness - occurrence, care program, development, aids, communication systems for deafblind.

Teaching methods
Self study, seminar thesis, case study.
Assessment methods
Processing and submission of: - seminar thesis in the lenght of 10 - 15 pages. - case study concerning individual with hearing impairment. - diagnostic approach and recommendation for remediation. Course will be taught in two semestrs
