Course objectives

The course focuses on the knowledge of the ecclesiastic, political and cultural history of central, eastern and south-eastern Europe from the 4th to the end of the 15th century. On the basis of a commented analysis of the primary sources accompanied by an interpretation, the students will acquaint themselves with key factors, which in a fundamental way influenced the development of this part of Europe. These include, for example: Byzantium and its Oikoumene - the emergence and promotion of the Orthodox forms of Christianity
- the raids of Asian nomads - the activity of the Chivalric Orders in the Baltic lands
- the specific formation of the states and their specific administration and government. Emphasis will be placed on knowledge of the differences between Eastern and Western Europe and on the awareness of the common features and values of Christian Europe.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to: - understand the specificities of the development of medieval Eastern Europe, describe differences between Western and Eastern Christianity, name the basic causes of conflict between Western and Eastern Europe, justify the role of the Byzantine Empire and the nomads in the history of Eastern Europe, explain the role and the importance of the Orthodox Church in the history of Eastern Europe, define the circumstances of the rise of the despotic regimes, compare the specifics in the development of the Polish-Lithuanian Union and the Muscovite State and have basic knowledge of the medieval history of individual eastern-European countries.

History of Bulgaria, Serbia and the Ottoman Empire in the late Middle Ages 11. Eastern Europe in the 14th century. 12. Late Byzantium, the fall of Constantinople, the rise of the Ottoman Empire
